George W. Truett
(1867-1944)

George W. Truett A native North Carolinian, George Truett was educated and converted in his home town of Haynesville. He was founder and principal of Hiawassee Academy, Towns County, Georgia, before coming to Whitewright, Texas, where he was ordained into the ministry in 1890. Mr. Truett then came to Baylor University as financial secretary, and later entered the University as a freshman in September, 1883, and received his A. B. degree in June, 1897. In September of that year he was appointed pastor of the First Baptist Church, Dallas, Texas, and remained there until his death in 1944. During his fortyseven years as minister of this church Dr. Truett served as president of the Southern Baptist Convention and of the Baptist World Alliance. He was also Trustee of Baylor University, Waco, the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Ft. Worth, and Baylor Hospital, Dallas. A world traveler, Dr. Truett was constantly in demand for evangelistic, academic, and denominational sermons and addresses, many of which have been published in volume form.
